Wake Forest University is a private higher-educational institution located in North Carolina. It was founded in 1834. It employs about six hundred and thirty six faculty members and its motto is simply, "For humanity" or, in the Latinate, "Pro humanitate". The school was originally designed to each Baptist ministers and laymen. In 1834 it was still called the Wake Forest Manual Labor Institute because both students and staff were required to spend half of each day doing manual labor in the plantation, which the university received from one Dr. Calvin Jones. Since 1986, the university has produced eleven Rhodes Scholars and a number of Marshall and Fulbright recipients. In the 2009, Wake was tied with Tufts University as ranking at number twenty eighth in terms of quality of undergraduate teaching nationally. Athletically, the University's teams were originally known as the Fighting Baptists (a somewhat obvious designation given the University's inception). In 1923, however, after an impressive win against the Duke Blue Devils, a newspaper reports stated the Deacons "fought like Demons" which gave rise to the University's current team name which is the Demon Deacons. The Demon Deacons participate in the NCAA Division I and in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
