Vanderbilt University is private research university that was founded in 1873. The school comprises four undergraduate and six graduate schools and enrolls about twelve thousand students each year from the fifty states in the United States of America. Vanderbilt University also enrolls foreign students from some ninety countries. According to the U.S. News and World Report, the University ranks at number eighteen among national universities. Globally, the University ranks at number forty two. The University campus stretches over some three hundred and thirty acres of land. In terms of athletics, Vanderbilt is a charter member of the Southeastern Conference and is the conference's only private school. The school's athletics teams are nicknamed the Commodores in honor of its founder, Cornelius Vanderbilt.
