The University of Pittsburgh (which is commonly referred to as Pitt), is a research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The University has a good reputation in a variety of academic fields: it is noted, for instance, for its development of the first Polio vaccine. It was founded in 1787 on what used to be the American frontier. In 2006, the University was placed in the top cluster of seven leading US public research universities.
