The University of Oregon was founded in 1876 and is the second oldest public university in the state of Oregon. According to the Carnegie Foundation, the University is a "high research activity" institution of higher learning. The university's campus extends over some two hundred and ninety five acres and holds six major buildings. It is also home to more than five hundred varieties of trees. The University enjoys membership of the Pacific-10 Conference and Division I-A of the NCAA. University sports teams compete in fourteen sports ranging from football, basketball and cross country to tennis, gold, soccer and lacrosse. The mascot of the University is the fighting duck.
