The University of Maryland was founded in 1856. It has a total enrollment of some thirty six thousand students each year. The university is the largest in the state. Because of its location, the university has formed some strong research partnerships with the Federal government. The sports teams are called the Terrapins and mascot of the university is the diamondback terrapin named Testudo - latin for "protective shell".
