The University of Iowa is a research-centric university located in Iowa City, Iowa. It is also a Public Ivy and has around twenty thousand undergraduates each year. It was founded in 1847, and was Iowa's first public institution of higher learning. In 1855, the university become the first public university in the United States to admit men and women on an equal footing. Also, it was the first university in the world to accept creative work in theatre, writing, music and art on an equal basis with the more traditional types of academic research.
