Established in 1923, Texas Tech University is now the leading institution of the Texas Tech University System and has the seventh largest student body in the United States. The University has awarded over two hundred thousand degrees since 1927. Major research focuses include epidemiology, pulsed power, nanphotonics, grid computing and wind energy. The University's mascot is the Masked Rider and originated in 1936 when "ghost rider" were dared to circle the field prior to a home football game. In 1954, the Masked Rider become the official mascot when Joe Fulton led his team into the field in what was described as the most sensational entrance in bowl game history. The Double T spirit logo, which features on a number of products here, is also an an important insignia in the University's history. In fact, there is such a thing called the Double T Bench, located in the courtyard of the Administration Building on which freshmen are forbidden to sit.
