Willie the Wildcat has been the Northwestern University mascot since 1933 when he was introduced as the successor to the live bear cub named 'Furpaw'. He was chosen to represent the team's new name, something that was bestowed upon them by a local journalist who regarded them with admiration for their athletic prowess and dedication. For ten years, Willie the Wildcat was simply a logo but finally came to life in 1947 when members of the Alpha Delta fraternity dressed up like him for the homecoming parade. Since then Willie has been a constant member of the Northwestern Wildcat family, bringing good cheer and team pride to all of their games.
